Within the scope of Helene Bouras’s PhD thesis (2021-2024, University of Caen (UNICAEN) Normandy – France, UMR 8067 BOREA and LABÉO) on emerging pathogens in bivalve species, the bacterial strain Francisella halioticida has been isolated from mussel tissues in the laboratory LABÉO for the first time. This a world premiere. This bacterium is suspected to be the cause of mussel mortalities observed on the French coast since 2014 (Charles et al., 2020). The isolation of the local bacterial strain will allow its characterization (whole genome sequencing) and more importantly, to launch a large-scale experimental infection aiming to confirm if this bacterial strain is, indeed, a pathogen for mussels.

This PhD thesis project is fully integrated in the research program EPC « Emergence des Pathogènes en Conchyliculture / Emergence of pathogens in shellfish farming», financed by the Normandy region and the French departments Manche and Calvados (handled by the Normand Centre of fishing, shellfish and marine farming : CENOPAC). This project is supervised by four partners : the regional comity of shellfish farming (CRC)– Normandy North-Sea, the SMEL and the French laboratories UMR 8067 BOREA and LABÉO.
